I found this place about 8 years ago when there was saw dust or peanut shells on the floor and no menu. In their 3rd generation of family ownership there is no finer old school hamburger being served. Personally a "cheese burg fried" which is a cheeseburger with White Hut's signature fried onions, just plain is out of this world. Real short order cooks, nothing is written down as you hear 7 cheese burgs, 3 fried, 4 plain shouted out from the often standing crowd behind a completely filled old style lunch counter. In business at this location since 1939, something about that, the owners and the team is very unusual in this cookie cutter world.

I love this place. I don't know why the food is so delicious, it's really just simple burgers, dogs, and fries. The kitchen/standing area is maybe garage-sized with stool seating at the counter and standing tables in the back. You walk in, shout your order, are served in maybe 5-7 minutes, and then afterwards you pay by honor-system at the cashier. It's important to get fried onions on your cheeseburgers. This place seems expensive but I can't tell if their prices are high or if I just always end up eating too much when I go. Definitely worth driving out of the way for. For the best experience, go around noon when the place is packed and everybody is shouting.

We came here expecting to get some sort of breakfast sandwich, but they stop serving breakfast at 10:30. Bummer. Instead we had some burgers that were just about the perfect hangover cure! Perfectly cooked, the onions are wonderful and we could sit at the counter. Onion rings are just eh. You can skip them. But eat the burgers! Even if you think you don't need to...you really need two.

Well, if you like hamburgers give 'em a try sometime. Me, I can't usually eat 'em 'cause my girlfriend's a vegetarian. Which more or less makes me a vegetarian, but I sure love the taste of a good burger.

I love White Hut. I love it all. I love sitting at the counter and watching the well oiled machine do what it does best. I love the way they mark the burgers when they're ordered, I love the press of the people all around, I love the hustle and bustle of the place and I love the food. I usually get a burger and fries and sometimes an extra burger or dog. As a friend of mine said, they go down easy. They are not sliders in the sense that they're little tiny burgers but you'll surprised after eating one that you want another and can probably easily put it away. I'm not a big fan of the grilled onions but some swear by them. This place is the epitome of old school, local, fast food at its finest. It gets crowded so be patient and you'll be helped with some great servers that know what they're doing.

A cheeseburger with fried onions hits the spot, not the greatest burger I've tried but definitely reminds me of a backyard bbq, probably because of the simplicity of the ingredients and that they cook it right there to order. *Burgers are cut in half for the ladies ;)

EXCELLENT OMELETTE! Seriously the best I have ever had. And the staff was as friendly as I've seen. This place was recommended by a former local that knew the staff. I'm glad I didn't try to go it alone without his advice, because I would have definitely felt out of place. But as soon as I mentioned his name, the entire restaurant welcomed me and chatted me up. Even the owners stopped by to shake my hand. The omelette was amazing and makes me think I've been making them wrong my entire life. Unfortunately I couldn't make it back for lunch to check out their unique ordering system and original language, but maybe next time I'm nearby.

They only have 12 seats or so but the turnaround is super quick. The grilled onions are a must. The burgers are juicy and the onion rings are crunchy but not overly so. The location is also not far from six flags. Best burgers around... now only if they would open another store close to Boston.

Let me tell you the story of my first experience with White Hut. Back when I was but a child, a wee Alex, I was out and traveling with whoever was chauffeuring me that day - in this case, my dad - and I wanted McDonald's. I wanted McDonald's in the worst way, in the way that only a seven-year-old craving those Golden Arches could want McDonald's. And my father agreed to get me said McDonald's ... but first we were making a stop for him. In we walked to White Hut, a tiny white building off a busy road and across the stress from a shopping mall. It didn't seem like anything special ... but then I got through the doors. Oh, my! The smell of freshly cooked food on that grill hit me at once and all thoughts of terribly processed and terribly made cheap-imitations of a hamburger dissipated from my mind. I wanted whatever this was! And so, I was hooked on White Hut from smell alone. And when I bit into that burger, my brain popped with happiness. There's no toppings on the burger besides cheese, onions (if you want them) and condiments. It doesn't need it. The bread is soft and probably right out of a bag. Doesn't matter. This burger is one of the greatest ever cooked, filled with tastes you didn't even know existed. It's amazing. They also do hot dogs, which are equally good (but I just love the burger more) and fries and now even breakfast! Neat. White Hut is tiny. There are stools around the counter and that's it. Can't find one? Tough luck. Either stand around waiting for one or take your food to go - I promise, it's just as good at a table or bench of even in your car right outside. Plus they sell Stewart's sodas, the best sodas ever. Go here. Go here now. Sit down or get it to go, just go! You will thank me ... or you won't, because your mouth with be too full of burger. But I'll see the thanks in your eyes.

I don't live in the area anymore, but man do I miss this place! I make sure to stop in every time I'm back in town though! It's beats the fast food chains any day! Just get one of each... Cheeseburg fried, dog fried, and fries... Fried meaning with grilled onions (mmmmmm!). Make sure to come back for breakfast sometime too. It's quick and good!

My uncle used to take me here as a kid, nearly thirty years ago. A big fan of the place, he insisted that the only thing to eat at the White Hut was hot dogs and fries, and the only way to get your hot dog was with mustard and onions. Now, I've never had anything else there, so I can't say whether I've missed out on anything, but I never regretted a meal there.

Have eaten here for years....never reviewed the place. Have never ordered anything except their hot dogs and let me tell you..they are delicious. Had 3 more today at lunch...mouth watering. Part of their secret is the toasted bun....put the hot dog inside the bun with a little mustard....and you've got hot dog heaven! if i had a gripe I'd say $2.80 for a relatively small dog is outrageous but it sure is tasty. I also don't like the entire set up at white Hut. hoping to catch the eye of the server....yelling your order over the person next you...oh well. No one ever said life was easy!! I consider myself a hot dog connoisseur and place the dog served here right at the top. yummy!!

Perfect burger spot. gotta stop here if your in the area and in need of a quick fix. Burger with cheese and fried onions is what I would suggest to anyone. The burgers aren't real big but the quality is definitely there.

Another wicked old-school mass institution that should be made a national landmark. If you are a burger eater, you have to go to this place. get a arm load of hamburgs with cheese and onions and whatever else you fancy - this is how it should be done. burgers, fast, greasy, cheesey - not much else, bare bones. keep it simple, stupid. the soda is stewarts rootbeer, and this is also good. fridge is full of all the stewarts pops right behind you. i have to admit - i do not eat meat, and went here today with some of my carnivore friends - they all partook in the hamburg, i opted for a 'grilled cheese' which was kind of a hamburger bun with 2 pieces of slightly melted cheese, and i had some fries and some rootbeer. pretty simple, and pretty damn good. nice crisp fries. honestly the classic cool eatery vibe gets it +1.5 points for me, the food isn't the high point (for me-a veggie)

The most overrated establishment in Western Mass. People swear by the burgers, but what comes to mind when eating them is someone cracked open a box of White Castles and charged $3.00 a "burger". I used the term "burger" loosely since they look like the squashed burgers Michael Douglas raged about in Falling Down. Why would I come to a cash only establishment to spend $6.50 on 2 tiny burgers? I wouldn't. Go to Wendy's for a $0.99 Double Stack. It tastes better and you can get twice as many.

So this gets 3.5 stars actually. I met a friend out in Western Mass to go "shootin'", as he calls it, and we came here for lunch afterwards. I was incredibly hungry and could not wait to get my hands on a greasy burger. We walked in and there was a bit of chaos. People milling about, no menu, bar seating only - it was a bit of a sensory overload. I was informed as to my only choices - burger, hot dog, and fries. I decided on one burger and we shared the fries. I guess you just tell them what you want and they seriously remember it somehow. They gave us our food and I grabbed a bottled root beer, one of my favorite non-alcoholic drinks. We just ate standing up at a counter and I dug in. The burger had a thin patty, melted cheese, and caramelized onions. It was pretty good but I prefer thick, juicy hunks of beef. The fries were medium sized and mealy on the inside with a decent crispness. It was good for what it was and it satisfied my hunger. Cash only.

If you grew up in the greater Springfield area, and/or went to the Big E at least once in your life, you've probably experienced (or at least heard of, you poor sod) the White Hut. This is what people call a Springfield institution. The burgers are small, greasy, and delicious; perfect comfort food. The service is quick, and the place gets crowded in a hurry on a weekday afternoon. But with good reason. If you want your food quick and cheap, yet damn tasty, you can't go wrong. Unless you're a vegetarian, in which case, you will never know what wonders you are missing.

The White Hut ceased being merely a burger joint eons ago and has without a doubt been elevated the status of Institution! It's imprint on the Western Mass landscape has become indelible. The "cheeseburg fried" (cheeseburger with fried onions) is absolute perfection and the hot dogs (recommended well done w/ mustard & relish) are too delicious. Add in bangin' breakfast sandwiches, amazing fresh-squeezed OJ and ice cold Stewie's and it simply doesn't get any better. So leave the 'tude at the door and enjoy!

There arnt many places like this around anymore. you walk up to the bar in this tiny shack of a restaurant and yell out an order. the only choices are hot dogs, burgers, and fries. They hand you your food about 2 min later fresh off the grill. basic toppings like lettuce tomato and fried onions compliment the burgers perfectly. they are nice and small so you can get seconds. I usually have 2 burgers and a hot dog. the feel inside is that this place hasn't changed since it opened in 1939.

Love this greasy burger joint. it's been around forever and is just the cure for a Sunday hangover. The fried onions make the burgers. It's nice that they have fries now(and they are good fries) but the grub is good without them. The dogs are excellent too, deep fried before getting thrown on the grill to keep warm, with the nice toasty hot dog buns that are the topper. You can get whatever toppings you want, or none at all. It's a once in a while heart-stopper joint that you've got to make a point to stop into every few months.

I get back to Springfield every couple of years and the White Hut always is my first stop (the Student Prince being the other). Ate there last Tuesday (first time since July 2005) and it was as awesome as always. Fed family of five for $27.50, everyone left happy and full!

Ever since I was a small(ish) child I've been a burger guy. Over the years I've tried your cheapy fast food chain burgers, your road-side shack burgers, your drive-in burgers, your sit-down restaurant burgers, your gourmet burger bar burgers, your "family-style" restaurant burgers, and your $6 "gourmet"-meets-fast-food burgers. The point is, I love burgers, and I've tried them all. And White Hut makes burgers that are some of THE BEST burgers I've eaten in my entire life! Some will poo-poo and say they can make burgers like these at home. But no, no they can't. Because if they could we'd all be eating at their house! Some may say that they're overpriced for what you get. But apparently they've never been confronted with an $11 hamburger before. Okay, the complaints have an element of truth. The ingredients are simple, with none of the frills that many diners have come to expect. And the food is slightly pricey. But the reality of the situation is that the flavor that comes off White Hut's grill can NOT be matched! Oh, you've got Kobe and Wagyu beef? Oh, you offer a thousand topping options? Oh, you've got sacks of fries fried in peanut oil and one of those cool Coke machines with all the flavors? Oh, you've got alcohol? Shakes with alcohol? Hmm, lemme think about it...Ehhh, whatever! White Hut has an old greasy grill, lunch counter service, burgers whose flavor far exceeds their size, hand cut fries, and onions fried to caramelized perfection! They also have a nice selection of flavorful sodas to boot! And the place is run like a well-oiled machine! There is no nonsense here. You're getting delicious, quality, food, backed by decades of legendary service and a sterling reputation. There is a reason White Hut is a Western Massachusetts institution. It's not hype. It's not sentimentality. It's flavor, plain and simple. It's a cheeseburger that tastes exactly like a cheeseburger is supposed to taste! It's the freakin' DEFINITION of cheeseburger! If you look up "cheeseburger" in your Websters there should be a picture of the White Hut staring back at you from the page! That's not to say other places aren't good too. Like I said, I've tried 'em all, and enjoyed most of them. But it you don't like the White Hut there's a good chance you just don't like burgers.

SOMETHING IN SPRINGFIELD MADE the list of "best 33 burgers in the country"?! this is an old school diner that's good but probably more of a locals' favorite. I wouldn't trek here just to try the burgers just sit down at the counter & order ---Cheese burger with special onions and tomato lettuce and mayo: (a popular combo of toppings according to the worker) They cut my cheeseburger in HALF but left my bf's whole because I am a girl! i guess girls are daintier when they eat? ---onion rings: I like the light breading, although they are greasy!! NOTE: They take credit card at the register on the right of the counter and cash only on the register at the left. PLUS: Breakfast is served everyday only til 1030am. You can order burgers and dogs anytime though!

Greasy heaven Crowded. A little surely (people taking your order), greasy (in a good way), dive-ish, with tons of regulars, this is the place to get a great tasting basic burger. While I'm not an onion lover, those onions in the grilled looked oddly tempting. Solid fries, but not the draw. Take a week off your life and grab a few burgers!

This place is ridiculous. Ridiculously good, that is. As other posters have commented, it's best to throw caution to the wind and order a hamburger with the fried onions. I've never had food served to me just on a napkin, but it works here ... and when the food is that good, who cares whether it comes on a big fancy plate? The fries were done to perfection, and I really enjoyed the witty and friendly banter with the staff. Definitely a place to stop at when I come back through Springfield again.

I was in the area paying a visit to the Basketball Hall of Fame. As usual, I used my trusty Yelp app to see if there was any interesting stops in the area. I found the White Hut and took a short ride over. I enjoyed this place. The counter girl was very friendly. I had a double cheeseburger with fried onions. The cheeseburger had two patties cooked on a grill with fried onions and white american all on a smaller toasted bun. While not the biggest or juiciest burger I've ever had, this burger had great flavor. I also tried a hot dog and fries. The hot dog was grilled and served on a toasted white bread style bun. The dog had a nice flavor to it and tasted great with some mustard and relish. My son had a vanilla shake ....very tasty!! I had a nice cup of coffee for the road....good bean here too. And was very glad I made a stop here. Great little casual spot with good food and fast friendly service.

I had read about White Hut online a couple times so made a point to stop here on a recent trip. The place really has an old-school american restaurant feel that is a rarity these days. The staff were friendly and the burger was good. I wasn't sure if they took cards when I ordered since everyone was paying with cash but they did. The onion rings were probably my favorite. If you're in the area do yourself a favor and give this place a try!

We had to stop here, since it's featured in Hamburger America. The place is a small, counter top stop. No nonsense! Ordered a cheeseburger with the grilled onion, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. They were very good. However, I'd recommend just onions and mayo. That's what I will be getting on my next trip. Also, you should order two. The breakfast sandwiches looked awesome, as well. I can see this moving to 5 stars once I achieve the above goal with the new method. Since this review wasn't particularly funny, I will end with a joke that will surely knock off your socks. How did the jury find the hamburger? Grillty as charred. That just happened.

I hesitate to say what I really feel about this iconic grill. I leave annoyed every time I visit. They ask me what I want before I even stop my entrance to the center of the floor to read the menu. I do want to try something different once in a while! The hamburgers are very small. I won't order them again. I ordered two hot dogs last week and waited for 10 minutes for the fries to cook...? I waited while people who came in after me got theirs, paid and left. Was it because my server was at the opposite end of the counter from the deep fryer?! She could have at least kept the dogs hot. I just don't get it. There is always a problem. Matter of fact, I'm reducing my rating to two stars just because I don't feel comfortable for giving three. Oh, two dogs, fries and a soda... almost ten dollars. Really? P.S. It smells bad out side, move the dumpster and spray the grounds with bleach and water for God's sake!!

I came here today before going to the Railroad Hobby Show down the street. I got a burger with lettuce and fries. The burger was average and so were the fries. I would not go out of my way to come here since you can get a burger at most restaurants. The way it works here is you order your food then they give it to you and then you sit or stand and eat and then you go tell the cashier what you ordered and pay before walking out the door. This is the only place I have been to that does this, if you wanted to you could lie about your order and they would probably never know if you are being honest or not.

When we went in there were a lot of people and there was no order and it was very difficult to get an order in. I give it five not because it's the best burger I've ever eaten, but it's the best burger joint I've ever sat in. You won't find a menu for anything other than shakes and floats, so allow me to explain.... 2 cheese wit fried, inside = 2 cheeseburgers with fried onions for here (not to-go) wit a side = with a side order of fries The staff is awesome. Each one of them stood out to me as being friendly, helpful and happy. I almost wanna write a book about what it's like to work here. Ladies' burgers are cut in half... how nice! I never really thought about how nice that would be. The burgers are pretty tasty: the cheese is nice and melty, the bun is toasted and they are just the right size. The hot dogs are good, I don't know how you could mess up a hot dog. You can add cheese and fried onions to dogs, too. Standard condiments of ketchup, mustard, relish and raw onions are available, too. The first visit, I tried a shake. It was.... ok. Nothing special. They use soft-serve ice cream (they have chocolate and vanilla) and it tasted like they didn't add any extra chocolate to the shake. I tried a black cherry float the next time, and YUM! I would get one of those again. Prices are whatever. You pay about $1.50 for a cheese wit fried and $1.75 for a side, I think. They'll get you on the shakes and floats, for almost $4 a piece. It's worth it, in my opinion. You're paying for the speed, the freshly made piping hot food, and above all, the nostalgia. This place is great. They'll have a barstool with my name on it before I'm dead.

Been going here for years! Always know for me as the place for a quick burger or cheese dog! Parking has improved but still tight.. hate to say it but yes I am a parking offender!! When there is no parking spots.. hello Taco Bell parking lot :) Seating is also tight inside... So grab a barstool as you get in or stand. A little seating outside- a newer addition. They do have a set up at the Big E fair. But I think the West Springfield location has a more authentic feel..

Being a life long resident of Springfield I'm kind of embarrassed that I've never been here. Well today was the big day. Stopped in during lunch time. It was moderately busy, but we were able to grab two stools up front. Staff was friendly and engaging making jokes and busting stones. Place was full of locals with first names being known on both sides. We ordered a strawberry milkshake, onion rings, couple burgers, and a lemonade. Overall, everything was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. The burger wasn't anything I couldn't make at home. For the price, it didn't seem worth the value. The patty was extremely thin, but it was nice to see they used real cheese and not processed cheese. Onion rings were good, and the lemonade was freshly squeezed. It's cool that they've been around since 1939 pumping out old time shakes and burgers. It has it's place, but I prefer something more creative. I would also like to see ALL, not some employees wear food handling gloves.

Burgers, dogs, and fries. That's about all you get here. They keep it simple and have been at it for many years. People generally rave about White Hut, but to me it's just meh. I make a much better burger at home. It's an assembly line with no atmosphere, but it's cheap, and quick, and better than McDonalds.

It is all about the caramelized onions. The flat top is well conditioned from years of service so of course the burgers are good, not huge, but good. The service is fine, with counter service they have a hard time avoiding you if it isn't crowded, like when I went. The huge stack of cartelized onion they keep at the edge of the flat top could be put on shoe leather, and make it palatable. The onion rings are also high quality, the onion doesn't slide out of the breading and leave you with two things you don't want. My buddy said the fries were good, and his burger without onions was good. Overall if you are a burger fan and in the area you should give it a try, if for no other reason than to be part of such a long tradition.

My friend drove by White Hut a couple weeks ago and suggested that we give it a try out of curiosity, and we are glad we did. The West Springfield location is very unassuming from the street, and sort of looks like a diner. When you walk in, there are maybe 8 bar stool-styled seats directly in front of the tiny kitchen area. You can see everything that's going on while they're making it, and the interactions between all the workers was pretty funny (albeit somewhat inappropriate since they were working), but nevertheless gave the place a very laid-back and fun vibe. Being first-timers, we asked for a menu, to which one of the workers stated "Burgers, dogs, and fries. That's it." A place that has been around as long as White Hut apparently has with such a simple menu definitely (hopefully) meant the burgers, dogs, and fries had to be pretty good. I ended up getting a double cheeseburger with lettuce, grilled onions, ketchup, and mustard with a side of fries. They also had a pretty good selection of milkshakes, floats, and old-style soda, so I went with a root beer float. The burger patties were very thin, so I was glad I went with a double instead of a single. The burger itself wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was definitely above average. I usually judge a places like this by how good their fries are, and they were very good and crispy. My root beer float was made with soft-serve ice cream which I love compared to scoops of hard ice cream. I would definitely go there again sometime. The price was a little more than I would spend for something similar at a place like McDonald's (about $10), but the fact that you can pretty much customize your burger, and can see it being made definitely adds a little something more.

I've been going to the white hut since I was 14 years old which is just shy of 30 years. Same guy at the grill same ridiculously good hamburgers and hotdogs. You can't go to western mass and not stop at white hut or you haven't been to Western mass. I don't live in the area anymore but I specifically stated come back for their food. Family run and operated and still on the trust system... You tell them what u had to eat at the register. Old school and still killing it the way a great place should.

While everyone seems to love love love this place, it's not all that wonderful. The burgers are ok, but from from frozen patties? Also the prices are horrendously high. $3.00 for a hot dog?? I'd just go down the street to costco and get a bigger, more delicious hot dog AND a soda for $1.50. Again, if you've got money to blow on subpar food, go here.

First time here, arrived late afternoon so I easily found room at the counter. A cheeseburger, fries and tea cost 6.50. As others commented, the burger is thin but fresh and tasty, the bun was nicely warned and the fries deliciously crispy. The onion rings looked fantastic, I'll have to try them next time. Fresh brewed iced tea was a pleasant surprise and I can't wait for the fresh lemonade after memorial day, almost everyone was already asking for a glass. Service was extremely friendly but remember, it was relatively quiet when I was there.

On March 3, Yahoo ran an article listing the "Best Burger" in every state. I was very surprised to see that White Hut won the title of "Best Burger in Massachusetts". I worked in West Springfield for a while, and must have driven past it a hundred times. Truth is, I never stopped here because it looked like a dump. But that was in my pre-Yelp days. One thing Yelp has done for me is to get me out of my comfort zone and venture into some places I might not have set foot in otherwise. So today, I set foot into the White Hut. It's not much to look at on the inside either - eleven counter stools and a U-shaped counter for 7 or 8 standees. I ordered a single cheeseburger with grilled onions, onion rings and a soft drink from a super sweet woman at the counter. The food ran about 8 and a half bucks. I sat at the counter and soaked in the 1950'ish atmosphere. The burger was pressed on the grill, so the roll was squished into English muffin proportions. This was hamburger simplicity and deliciousness at its pinnacle. Nice and juicy with great flavor. The grilled onions added a nice touch, as did the fresh lettuce and tomato. The rings were very good too, a generous portion of well cooked real onion rings. I take a lot of these "Best of" lists with a grain of salt. I mean seriously, in a state with over 21,000 restaurants, how can anyone possibly select the "best" hamburger. But these lists are fun to look at and argue over. Fun is also a good word to describe my first visit to the White Hut. It's a blast, a real walk into a time warp of a place. Go check it out.......

Never been to West Springfield before and don't really have any reason to return. But hot damn, those burgers were yummy! I got the fried onion while my husband skipped that topping so I saved him a couple of bites because I couldn't, in good conscience, let him leave without tasting how delicious they are. Sure, the wrapper used to pack up the burder was completely transparent with grease but: WORTH IT! The service was fast and the lady taking orders was so friendly and very nice.

Absolute classic burger joint from the 1930s ... Nothing fancy at all about this place. Diner counter and a few tables. I've heard about this place from locals and finally got to try it. Milk shakes are made fresh with ice cream and at only $3.50, they are worth every penny. Burgers are not huge but everything from the lettuce to the beef tasted fresh. I didn't get the famous grilled onions but have heard they are great. Fries and onion rings perfectly done ... French froes here are a magic hangover eraser. The value is there too! Everything is only a bit more expensive than fast food. Overall, if you don't mind a bit of commotion and disorder, its a great old fashioned burger/diner joint. They also serve breakfast. Oh ... And if you've ever eaten at the legendary In N Out burger chain ... This is as close to those burgers as I've found in MA. (Minus the animal style ...) I love White Hut!!

You walk in. You order burgers with cheese and onions. You speak in simple White Hut jargon, such as "two cheese with fried." White Hut cooks the burgers. You add ketchup if you wish and grab a Stewart's soda if you wish. Then you eat the burgers. You pay with cash, and repeat as necessary. That is it. You don't say you're "still thinking" when asked to order. You don't ask if there's lettuce or tomato. You don't order anything without cheese or onions. You don't complain about the lack of seating. You don't pay with plastic. This is the White Hut way. This is how it should be.

You shouldn't need to read a review of this place - by now you should already know how good it is... Don;t get me wrong, this isn't top quality beef. This place is all about everything else. The "fried" (read: grilled) onions are what make the burgers. Walk in and when you're asked if you've ordered yet ask for "Two cheese-fried and a dog while I wait," grab your favorite drink, listen to 'em proclaim, "NEW ORDER," as the dude tells the grill-person your new order. Voila, within minutes you're eating deliciousness.

Isn't this supposed to be the way burgers are meant to be? Simply cooked on a griddle, caramelized onions, and a soft and steamy bun is our first encounter with the aforementioned hamburger, and White Hut in Springfield has been doing it proud since 1939. A cheeseburger will set you back all of $2.75, of course any reasonably hungry human being should be able to devour at least two of the just barely bigger than a slider patties. If value was the only criterion, coupled with some burger simplicity, the White Hut burger would be king. Too bad all facets must be considered, and nostalgia and purity isn't enough to get by. White Hut falls a bit short on the beef barometer; no fault of their own, churning out mass quantities of burgers is the goal, and technically speaking they are successful. But the bland beef is hard to escape, most certainly originated from a frozen patty, there is almost no seasoning to speak of. Maybe it's unfair to be so tough on a burger that costs less than $3, but still, it's hard to overlook the mediocrity of the beef. That doesn't mean it's not delicious as a complete package; the sweet onions and delicate bun stand out enough on their own to warrant a recommendation. The fries are a success too; pretty standard, but crispier and more flavorful than many of the fries I encounter, all for the modest price of $1.60. Despite sub-par beef (one of my biggest pet peeves), the White Hut burger is an escape to the burgers of the past. Extraordinarily difficult to review, I've had far worse burgers that cost much more. Is it enjoyable solely on the simplicity and the cost? Yes and no, worthy of a visit, satisfying for a multitude of reasons, but the greatest burger in the world it is not.

White Hut is living proof that you can find delicious food in the most simple, cheapest and most unassuming places. This tiny no-frills establishment about ten minutes away from I-90 is a gem. Let me start with the fact that the employees of this fine establishment are delightful. After reading about this place in Roadfood*, I knew I had to come here but I was little confused when I saw a ice cream/shake menu but no food menu. The girl at the counter read my face and explained to me the menu is very simple: burgers, hot dogs, fries, ice cream, milk shakes. That's it. Furthermore, obviously being an out of towner, she explained to me all of the toppings they had, prices, etc. It's always nice not being hassled for not knowing the menu or what I want, as I find in many establishments in DC. Anyway, on to the food! For $7, I got a cheeseburger with fried onions, a hot dog, fries and a drink. If that ain't cheap, then I don't know what is. The fries were okay but everything else was delicious. In fact, I think this may have been one of the best hot dogs I've ever had. Whether you live nearby or are just stopping through, I implore you to pay White Hut a visit. *Footnote: If you like to travel, often find yourself on road trips or just like finding new quick, cheap places to eat, you absolutely need to buy a copy of Roadfood. Not only is an amazing resource, if you're not quite sure where you are going (as I was in this camp with my most recent road trip), it can help you plan a trip via as many restaurants as possible.

Food: Burgers and hot-dogs are incredible here! I've been dozens of times, even several times in the last few years, despite living 40 minutes away at this point. Everyone I've brought there has really enjoyed the burgers. I recommend trying a burger both with and without the carmalized onions. The flavor is indescribable, and the texture, which I attribute to the perfect toasted bun/cheese/meat ratio, somehow makes it seem easier to eat than any other burger. The fries are good too, but I usually skip those and save room for an extra dog or burger. The burgers are small, so order two, or get fries or a hot dog. Price: The prices are very reasonable, figure on spending around $10-12 for an average person. The person taking your order is the person most likely making the food (right in front of you), so payment is given to someone else on your way out in order to keep things efficient/clean. Insider Info: As you'll immediately realize upon entering, this isn't a sit down type place. When it's busy that's sometimes not even an option. Be prepared to order by just yelling out, possibly over the top of people sitting at the bar. And don't specify what you want on the burgers/hot dogs except if you want cheese or carmalized onions or not, the rest is added after they're done (they make way too many at once to remember that you wanted two cheeseburgers, one with fried onions and ketchup, the other with raw onions, mustard and relish.)

I was in Springfield a couple of days for business and all I ate the whole time was Dunkin Donuts and White Hut. I know what you are thinking... while this guy is some health food nut or something.... that's just how I roll. I very rarely eat at the same place twice, especially when traveling but White Hut was that good. Yes it is confusing, there are no menus, you are not sure what to do or what to say but you get accustom to it real quick. Basically they have burgers, cheese burgers, hot dogs, and fries. For Breakfast its basically the same thing except replace the fries with home fries and add ham and egg into the mix. I ate there for breakfast and lunch but I had basically the same thing every time. The fries, regular or home fries, are regular run of the mill potatoes. Nothing too spectacular. The burgers, remind me of a bigger version of white castle. the patties are thin and while they are "fried" on the griddle they come out steamed like White Castle (or Krystal if you prefer). They are moist, and delicious just don't expect a big hunk of meat (unless I pull up a stool next to you.. ZING bam bow.. isn't that great?). On the burgers you have the options of fried onions (not crunchy deep fried). I got them with as the onions are amazing. After that all I did was add cheese and mustard. The cheese is white, uber-creamy, and super cheesey (like my hunk comment above). Buns are warmed and soft. So for the new timers.. this is what I gathered on how you order. You either order and pay later or pay and then order. Either way you say the order twice. CASH ONLY. My order "Double Cheese fried with Mustard" (or you can skip the mustard part as they will ask you what you want on it later anyways. I had breakfast there too but I kept the order the same. why mess wih greatness. **ADDED BONUS: they have stewarts diet root beer (along with other bottles of soda) Told you I am a health food nut.

(I lived there 11 years before moving back east), so maybe I just don't 'get it' as my friends say but what is all the fuss? the burgers are not that good. Ok, so the onions are good, but other than that, standard, don't stand out, don't make you go WOW Yes, they have been there like 90 years, yes, they were in maxim magazine. Yes, everything is made to order and it is busy. 5 Stars! All Day, Every Day! White Hut is like an underground gambling parlor in many ways. You may have heard rumors and talk of how great it is, and chances are you've passed by it completely unaware of its existence. It's one of those places that you really shouldn't venture into unless you know someone who's a regular. The ordering process is as unforgiving as a game of Russian Roulette. Have your order ready in your head before you even lay a hand on the door. If your killer instinct is not clean, and strong, you will hesitate at the moment of truth! You have limited options: Hamburger Cheeseburger Hot Dog Fries Fried Onions, Lettuce, Tomato...END The burgers are small and delicious. The rough equivalent to a McDonald's burger in size, but packed with about 5x as much flavor. I've never had a hot dog at White Hut, mostly because I've never felt the need to change my order. My mouth is watering just writing this review. MUST HAVE WHITE HUT!

I love white-hut because by the time you've had your third burger, you've realized how great the fries go with the root beer! Its very fast, I would go with my dad before work every friday for a while, but much much much better than out "fast-food" places like McD's. The family the owns it is very nice and caring, and the food is delicious! I would say it's a must-go if you're in West Springfield!!

Second time here. I introduced my wife and two year old to White Hut with cheeseburgers with onions and a hotdog. The menu is easy, burger or dog, add fries if you so desire. Kinda like the soup Nazi as far as placing yoir food order. Simply spout "three cheese with onion, one dog" and you'll get three delicious cheeseburgers with caramelized onions and one hotdog in a perfectly toasted bun. Ill be a regular every time i pass by. Highly recommend stopping by and experiencing this local flavor palace. Glenn.

A West Springfield institution. White Hut has acheieved everything it's trying to be. For nearly 70 years, this place has been flipping sliders. Grill cooks whiz back and forth, the flat top barely visible through the layer of circular patties and heaps of onions. Call it fast food if you like, but it's certainly on another level. Packed to the brim at lunch, burgers are sizzling non-stop and the grilled onions are not to be missed - order as simple as: "With" or "With out". They'll throw a slice of cheese on, but it's the onions that are clutch. Order one and you can expect it to arrive on a napkin. Two or more gets you a plate. You might have to fight off a few hungry customers for a stool but even if you find yourself tucked in the back corner against the drink cooler, your burgers will be equally delicious.

the locals love this place but it really is more of a nostalgic place--reminiscent of the post-war burger stand--than any real contender in the world of delicious burgers. The burger is your typical SYSCO quality frozen patty (about the size of a McDonald's patty) cooked on a griddle with onions which accompany the burger. Because of this, the burger is quite greasy and small and, for around 3 dollars, not quite as satisfying as one would expect.

White Hut has a special place in my heart. Whether it's Big E time, or just some random time of year, they're always ready with their relatively cheap, well-made, down home burgers. They can be a little on the small side, but with some grilled onions, they're grease heaven (and, considering this place has the perfect feel of part greasy diner, part 1950s nostalgia, it's the perfect fit). There may be other burger joints in the world, but there's only one White Hut. And it's one glorious, greasy hamburger-filled hut at that.

I love a good burger joint and White Hut is just that; good but not great. Don't get me wrong, it was a great experience, just not a great burger. Stepping inside the place is like stepping back in time to the 50's. And that's not due to some careful interior design planning, it's just never changed...ever. No menus so i had to act like a tourist and ask what's going on. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chili dogs. I ordered 2 cheeseburgers and fries and they cooked them up in front of me while i sat at the counter. The burgers aren't seasoned so that's why i couldn't give it 5 stars. The burgers were just, eh. The place is 4th generation owned. The owner and i chatted about its history while his Mom {happy birthday} served me my burgers with the fried onions and my selected condiments . His young daughter took my payment so it's a real, cool family environment. great fries too. You gotta check it out. A real blast from the past.

For beginners, the burger had no taste and no flavor and the saute onion was equally tastless. To add insult to injury the saute onion only made the white burger bun soggy. Though the change over from the parents to the kids in ownership has produced a few changes, it's still a great place to grab a quick bite to eat CHEAP. A hot dog, order of fries, and a soda runs a little under $5. It's a barebones, pull a stool up-to the bar and watch us cook your food-type place, and the foot reflects that. Burgers, fries, hot dogs & that's it. As an added bonus: they stock Stewarts soda & put malt vinegar out for your french fries! Malt vinegar on fries on one of my favorites and most places around here only put out the standard issue ketchup.

White Hut is something of a local institution in West Side, and while I can see the cult appeal, if taken purely on the food, the Hut is rather ordinary. I can't say I'm not a fan-- I appreciate the crazy atmosphere, the honest fast-food grilling, and the fact that it's a local line joint instead of a corporate stooge haven-- and I'll happily take folks there to experience the local flavor, even though the menu isn't one I can eat off of any more. Ultimately, you can get only a handful of things, and all those are very simple in nature: hamburg, cheeseburger, hot dog, fries. Pick your option, pay, eat, get out. It's that simple. They give the option of grilled onions for your food-- and those are cool. The rest of the options seem institutional in quality, so they're not really a big deal one way or the other. Really, the appeal to the joint, I think, is the crazed nature of the place, not the chow. I recommend it-- just don't expect a gourmet burger, OK?

I'm a huge fan of crazy, packed, and hectic line-cooking joints like this one. They fall under the category of "know what you want and order it, damn-it, because there are only about 5 items on the menu and they're all good". All of the employees have a crazy organization to get everyone in and out quick style, and I love the grilled buns and caramelized onions. They're one of the local food vendors you must to leave room for if you attend the Big-E. I've only frequented them a handful of times with my main squeeze, as he's a Springfield local, and was obligated to share with me his favorite burger. I remember the first time we went I was a vegetarian and wasn't able to order anything, but after laying eyes on his juicy, delicious burger I started to gravitate toward the dark side ;)

Nothing special about them at all. No taste. Grade: D. The operation of the restaurant was chaotic at best. Things weren't crazy because the place was packed but because the workers were disorganized and did not work together. They spent more time bumping into each other than anything else. WOW! The VERY BEST Hot Dog I think I can ever remember having! If not the best, it was definitely top 3! We weren't even planning on going here, but on a Sat afternoon, on our way to somehwere else, I said, Oooh, let's see if White Hut is open! IT WAS! Yaaaaay! It is just as described, you walk in, there are appx 12 counter stools and the aluminum stand table in the back. The employees were cool and very nice. We took our seat on the stools and ordered up our first items (we took the lead from another yelper, who said they ordered things one at a time, which was perfect, that way, the items are fresh and hot, plus you wait less than a minute or two for your next items! I started with a Hot Dog and he started with a Cheeseburger, and we split one order of fries. We helped ourselves to the cooler in back, where he selected a Black Cherry Stewarts Soda, and I had a Grape. We each got their scrumptious grilled onions on our items. The buns are buttered and grilled and as I sit here recalling the taste, my mouth is watering! The fries were FANTASTIC, twice fried, so their were super crisp (yet tender inside), and stayed hot for a long time! After we each finished, we ordered the opposite (he a hot dog w/ mustard and relish, me a Cheeseburger with raw onions, lettuce, mayo, ketchup and mustard). Again, a hit for each of us! The prices were fantastic as well, we ended up with 2 orders of fries, a total of 3 hot dogs, and 2 cheeseburgers, and 2 sodas......grand total.....$14. (and change)! I couldn't believe it, you couldn't get out of McDonald's with that much food, for that little amount of money! Overall, the Hot dogs were my fave, altho the burgers were yummy too. They are very thin, I think a double cheeseburger would be pretty yumbly!....Next time I would do the very same thing, in the same order. It was super satisfying, and we both kept saying, "WOW, this is so damn tasty"! The hot dogs (i tried not to notice this) are fried first, and then done up on the grill. They had a lovely snap to them and the meat was all beef and was mild and flavorful. Not salty tasting, not overly spiced like a Nathans dog. Also, the service was fast and friendly....the yelper who said you could easily spend less than 20 minutes getting off the highway, eating, and getting back to your trip was totally right on the mark! This place opens every day at 6:30 am, and serves BREAKFAST! I will update if i ever get up there to try it! Its all egg based (no pancakes or French toast), but you can have eggs any way, and egg sandwiches, plus they have bacon and sausages....and you can have burgers also that early, altho the guy was telling me the burgers take a little longer because they have the grill set to a lower temp for the eggs. OK, so now you know all about White Hut! Run out NOW AND GO THERE! (especially you, my Hot Dog Loving friends...Matt, Mich, and others!) LOL............ If you are timid or nervous in boisterous places think twice before you go here. That being said this is so straight forward the place becomes a sh#$ show. Basically you walk in and there is a small counter of a dozen stool and a small line of cooks and equiptment behind it. There were two ladies shouting at the crowd who needs to order. People raised their hands, stepped forward and spouted out their orders. There is no menu posted anywhere or anything like that, but here are your choices: 1) Hot dog 2) hamburger 3) cheese burger 4) cheese burger with cooked onions 5) french fries Yes the menu is that simple, and that is the only reason this place could function the way it does. After you order just pay attention because whoever you ordered from will shout "who got ........." once you respond they want to know what you want on your food (ketchup, mustard, relish, and raw onions). They slap it together, hand it to you, and then you drift away into a blissful inner fat kid moment. There was no room at the stools so we crowded around a small stainless steel prep table in the middle of the dining room and stuffed our faces. Some of us went up for seconds, and those that did not were in a trance-like state mumbling about how great the experience was. After we ate we meandered over to the register, and recalled what we had inhaled, and payed the guy at the register. The price was awesome. for 4 people we devoured 8 cheese burgers, 6 hot dogs, 4 beverages, and 2 sides of fries for $40!!! Now the food: the fries were crispy golden brown and delicious, the burgers were 2 oz handfuls of heaven, and I am pretty sure the hot dogs had crack in them they were so dam good. And the hot dog buns were traditional Newe England style: to split buns toasted after a little butter was brushed on either side.....perfect I will be back in force in a few months (1.5 hr drive from Boston)

I must have passed this place a dozen times in my life before I finally stopped. I'm kicking myself every since for that small bit moronic inebtitude but alas, I finally stopped. I now have contracted H.A.S. (Hamburger addictive syndrome) because of this place. The doctor said I'mm allowed to go back once in awhile to feed the ever growing hunger for a hard iron grilled burger with grilled onions on a browned bun, with cheese if I must. When I took my first bite, the clouds were puffier, the sky bluer, and the traffic, not so bad. Do you live close? Get there for lunch. It will make your day much better!

When I first saw these baby burgers, I'm was reminded of that ad, 'Where's the beef?" I would rather drive a little further to Local Burger. The burger is too thin. Way to thin. I want to taste beef, not onions. Wendy's has better Cheeseburgers. Usually I go for this type of roadside food, I think it really fails to live up to the hype. Ironically I dislike all beef dogs, which this place seems to serve. I want pork and beef with a skin that snaps. Maybe if I grew up with this place the nostalgic memories would make it a 3 star place?

The White Hut is a tiny little hometown burger joint that hasn't changed much over the years. Whenever I bring people home to Western Mass, it's mandatory that I take them to experience the mega-greasy gloriousness that is White Hut. The burgers are tiny and good luck finding a place to sit, but that's what I love about the place. It's so loud in there so you have to pretty much yell your order to the cook and they add it to the 5-10 orders they're working on at the time. No matter how busy it is, I'm always in and out in under 10 minutes. The menu is tiny as they only offer burgers, hot dogs and fries so there's little room to screw up an order. When the Big E comes around, you can always grab White Hut there as well, and it's just as good.

EXCELLENT OMELETTE! Seriously the best I have ever had. And the staff was as friendly as I've seen. This place was recommended by a former local that knew the staff. I'm glad I didn't try to go it alone without his advice, because I would have definitely felt out of place. But as soon as I mentioned his name, the entire restaurant welcomed me and chatted me up. Even the owners stopped by to shake my hand. The omelette was amazing and makes me think I've been making them wrong my entire life. Unfortunately I couldn't make it back for lunch to check out their unique ordering system and original language, but maybe next time I'm nearby.

You shouldn't need to read a review of this place - by now you should already know how good it is... Don;t get me wrong, this isn't top quality beef. This place is all about everything else. The "fried" (read: grilled) onions are what make the burgers. Walk in and when you're asked if you've ordered yet ask for "Two cheese-fried and a dog while I wait," grab your favorite drink, listen to 'em proclaim, "NEW ORDER," as the dude tells the grill-person your new order. Let me tell you the story of my first experience with White Hut. Back when I was but a child, a wee Alex, I was out and traveling with whoever was chauffeuring me that day - in this case, my dad - and I wanted McDonald's. I wanted McDonald's in the worst way, in the way that only a seven-year-old craving those Golden Arches could want McDonald's. And my father agreed to get me said McDonald's ... but first we were making a stop for him. In we walked to White Hut, a tiny white building off a busy road and across the stress from a shopping mall. It didn't seem like anything special ... but then I got through the doors. Oh, my! The smell of freshly cooked food on that grill hit me at once and all thoughts of terribly processed and terribly made cheap-imitations of a hamburger dissipated from my mind. I wanted whatever this was! And so, I was hooked on White Hut from smell alone. And when I bit into that burger, my brain popped with happiness. There's no toppings on the burger besides cheese, onions (if you want them) and condiments. It doesn't need it. The bread is soft and probably right out of a bag. Doesn't matter. This burger is one of the greatest ever cooked, filled with tastes you didn't even know existed. It's amazing. They also do hot dogs, which are equally good (but I just love the burger more) and fries and now even breakfast! Neat. White Hut is tiny. There are stools around the counter and that's it. Can't find one? Tough luck. Either stand around waiting for one or take your food to go - I promise, it's just as good at a table or bench of even in your car right outside. Plus they sell Stewart's sodas, the best sodas ever. Go here. Go here now. Sit down or get it to go, just go! You will thank me ... or you won't, because your mouth with be too full of burger. But I'll see the thanks in your eyes.

My uncle used to take me here as a kid, nearly thirty years ago. A big fan of the place, he insisted that the only thing to eat at the White Hut was hot dogs and fries, and the only way to get your hot dog was with mustard and onions. Part of their secret is the toasted bun....put the hot dog inside the bun with a little mustard....and you've got hot dog heaven! if i had a gripe I'd say $2.80 for a relatively small dog is outrageous but it sure is tasty. If you are a burger eater, you have to go to this place. get a arm load of hamburgs with cheese and onions and whatever else you fancy - this is how it should be done. burgers, fast, greasy, cheesey - not much else, bare bones. keep it simple, stupid. the soda is stewarts rootbeer, and this is also good. fridge is full of all the stewarts pops right behind you. i have to admit - i do not eat meat, and went here today with some of my carnivore friends - they all partook in the hamburg, i opted for a 'grilled cheese' which was kind of a hamburger bun with 2 pieces of slightly melted cheese, and i had some fries and some rootbeer. pretty simple, and pretty damn good. nice crisp fries. honestly the classic cool eatery vibe gets it +1.5 points for me, the food isn't the high point (for me-a veggie)

The most overrated establishment in Western Mass. People swear by the burgers, but what comes to mind when eating them is someone cracked open a box of White Castles and charged $3.00 a "burger". I used the term "burger" loosely since they look like the squashed burgers Michael Douglas raged about in Falling Down. Why would I come to a cash only establishment to spend $6.50 on 2 tiny burgers? I wouldn't. Go to Wendy's for a $0.99 Double Stack. It tastes better and you can get twice as many.

So this gets 3.5 stars actually. I met a friend out in Western Mass to go "shootin'", as he calls it, and we came here for lunch afterwards. I was incredibly hungry and could not wait to get my hands on a greasy burger. We walked in and there was a bit of chaos. People milling about, no menu, bar seating only - it was a bit of a sensory overload. I was informed as to my only choices - burger, hot dog, and fries. I decided on one burger and we shared the fries. I guess you just tell them what you want and they seriously remember it somehow. They gave us our food and I grabbed a bottled root beer, one of my favorite non-alcoholic drinks. We just ate standing up at a counter and I dug in. The burger had a thin patty, melted cheese, and caramelized onions. It was pretty good but I prefer thick, juicy hunks of beef. The fries were medium sized and mealy on the inside with a decent crispness. It was good for what it was and it satisfied my hunger. Cash only.

Isn't this supposed to be the way burgers are meant to be? Simply cooked on a griddle, caramelized onions, and a soft and steamy bun is our first encounter with the aforementioned hamburger, and White Hut in Springfield has been doing it proud since 1939. A cheeseburger will set you back all of $2.75, of course any reasonably hungry human being should be able to devour at least two of the just barely bigger than a slider patties. If value was the only criterion, coupled with some burger simplicity, the White Hut burger would be king. Too bad all facets must be considered, and nostalgia and purity isn't enough to get by. White Hut falls a bit short on the beef barometer; no fault of their own, churning out mass quantities of burgers is the goal, and technically speaking they are successful. But the bland beef is hard to escape, most certainly originated from a frozen patty, there is almost no seasoning to speak of. Maybe it's unfair to be so tough on a burger that costs less than $3, but still, it's hard to overlook the mediocrity of the beef. That doesn't mean it's not delicious as a complete package; the sweet onions and delicate bun stand out enough on their own to warrant a recommendation. The fries are a success too; pretty standard, but crispier and more flavorful than many of the fries I encounter, all for the modest price of $1.60. Despite sub-par beef (one of my biggest pet peeves), the White Hut burger is an escape to the burgers of the past. Extraordinarily difficult to review, I've had far worse burgers that cost much more. Is it enjoyable solely on the simplicity and the cost? Yes and no, worthy of a visit, satisfying for a multitude of reasons, but the greatest burger in the world it is not.

White Hut is living proof that you can find delicious food in the most simple, cheapest and most unassuming places. This tiny no-frills establishment about ten minutes away from I-90 is a gem. Let me start with the fact that the employees of this fine establishment are delightful. After reading about this place in Roadfood*, I knew I had to come here but I was little confused when I saw a ice cream/shake menu but no food menu. The girl at the counter read my face and explained to me the menu is very simple: burgers, hot dogs, fries, ice cream, milk shakes. That's it. Furthermore, obviously being an out of towner, she explained to me all of the toppings they had, prices, etc. It's always nice not being hassled for not knowing the menu or what I want, as I find in many establishments in DC. Anyway, on to the food! For $7, I got a cheeseburger with fried onions, a hot dog, fries and a drink. If that ain't cheap, then I don't know what is. The fries were okay but everything else was delicious. In fact, I think this may have been one of the best hot dogs I've ever had. Whether you live nearby or are just stopping through, I implore you to pay White Hut a visit. *Footnote: If you like to travel, often find yourself on road trips or just like finding new quick, cheap places to eat, you absolutely need to buy a copy of Roadfood. Not only is an amazing resource, if you're not quite sure where you are going (as I was in this camp with my most recent road trip), it can help you plan a trip via as many restaurants as possible.

Food: Burgers and hot-dogs are incredible here! I've been dozens of times, even several times in the last few years, despite living 40 minutes away at this point. Everyone I've brought there has really enjoyed the burgers. I recommend trying a burger both with and without the carmalized onions. The flavor is indescribable, and the texture, which I attribute to the perfect toasted bun/cheese/meat ratio, somehow makes it seem easier to eat than any other burger. The fries are good too, but I usually skip those and save room for an extra dog or burger. The burgers are small, so order two, or get fries or a hot dog. Price: The prices are very reasonable, figure on spending around $10-12 for an average person. The person taking your order is the person most likely making the food (right in front of you), so payment is given to someone else on your way out in order to keep things efficient/clean. Insider Info: As you'll immediately realize upon entering, this isn't a sit down type place. When it's busy that's sometimes not even an option. Be prepared to order by just yelling out, possibly over the top of people sitting at the bar. And don't specify what you want on the burgers/hot dogs except if you want cheese or carmalized onions or not, the rest is added after they're done (they make way too many at once to remember that you wanted two cheeseburgers, one with fried onions and ketchup, the other with raw onions, mustard and relish.)

I was in Springfield a couple of days for business and all I ate the whole time was Dunkin Donuts and White Hut. I know what you are thinking... while this guy is some health food nut or something.... that's just how I roll. I very rarely eat at the same place twice, especially when traveling but White Hut was that good. Yes it is confusing, there are no menus, you are not sure what to do or what to say but you get accustom to it real quick. Basically they have burgers, cheese burgers, hot dogs, and fries. For Breakfast its basically the same thing except replace the fries with home fries and add ham and egg into the mix. I ate there for breakfast and lunch but I had basically the same thing every time. The fries, regular or home fries, are regular run of the mill potatoes. Nothing too spectacular. The burgers, remind me of a bigger version of white castle. the patties are thin and while they are "fried" on the griddle they come out steamed like White Castle (or Krystal if you prefer). They are moist, and delicious just don't expect a big hunk of meat (unless I pull up a stool next to you.. ZING bam bow.. isn't that great?). On the burgers you have the options of fried onions (not crunchy deep fried). I got them with as the onions are amazing. After that all I did was add cheese and mustard. The cheese is white, uber-creamy, and super cheesey (like my hunk comment above). Buns are warmed and soft. So for the new timers.. this is what I gathered on how you order. You either order and pay later or pay and then order. Either way you say the order twice. CASH ONLY. My order "Double Cheese fried with Mustard" (or you can skip the mustard part as they will ask you what you want on it later anyways. I had breakfast there too but I kept the order the same. why mess wih greatness. **ADDED BONUS: they have stewarts diet root beer (along with other bottles of soda) Told you I am a health food nut.

5 Stars! All Day, Every Day! White Hut is like an underground gambling parlor in many ways. You may have heard rumors and talk of how great it is, and chances are you've passed by it completely unaware of its existence. It's one of those places that you really shouldn't venture into unless you know someone who's a regular. The ordering process is as unforgiving as a game of Russian Roulette. Have your order ready in your head before you even lay a hand on the door. If your killer instinct is not clean, and strong, you will hesitate at the moment of truth! You have limited options: Hamburger Cheeseburger Hot Dog Fries Fried Onions, Lettuce, Tomato...END The burgers are small and delicious. The rough equivalent to a McDonald's burger in size, but packed with about 5x as much flavor. I've never had a hot dog at White Hut, mostly because I've never felt the need to change my order. My mouth is watering just writing this review. MUST HAVE WHITE HUT!

Second time here. I introduced my wife and two year old to White Hut with cheeseburgers with onions and a hotdog. The menu is easy, burger or dog, add fries if you so desire. Kinda like the soup Nazi as far as placing yoir food order. Simply spout "three cheese with onion, one dog" and you'll get three delicious cheeseburgers with caramelized onions and one hotdog in a perfectly toasted bun. Ill be a regular every time i pass by. A West Springfield institution. White Hut has acheieved everything it's trying to be. For nearly 70 years, this place has been flipping sliders. Grill cooks whiz back and forth, the flat top barely visible through the layer of circular patties and heaps of onions. Call it fast food if you like, but it's certainly on another level. Packed to the brim at lunch, burgers are sizzling non-stop and the grilled onions are not to be missed - order as simple as: "With" or "With out". They'll throw a slice of cheese on, but it's the onions that are clutch. Order one and you can expect it to arrive on a napkin. Two or more gets you a plate. You might have to fight off a few hungry customers for a stool but even if you find yourself tucked in the back corner against the drink cooler, your burgers will be equally delicious.

the locals love this place but it really is more of a nostalgic place--reminiscent of the post-war burger stand--than any real contender in the world of delicious burgers. The burger is your typical SYSCO quality frozen patty (about the size of a McDonald's patty) cooked on a griddle with onions which accompany the burger. Because of this, the burger is quite greasy and small and, for around 3 dollars, not quite as satisfying as one would expect.

I love a good burger joint and White Hut is just that; good but not great. Don't get me wrong, it was a great experience, just not a great burger. Stepping inside the place is like stepping back in time to the 50's. And that's not due to some careful interior design planning, it's just never changed...ever. No menus so i had to act like a tourist and ask what's going on. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chili dogs. I ordered 2 cheeseburgers and fries and they cooked them up in front of me while i sat at the counter. The burgers aren't seasoned so that's why i couldn't give it 5 stars. The burgers were just, eh. The place is 4th generation owned. The owner and i chatted about its history while his Mom {happy birthday} served me my burgers with the fried onions and my selected condiments . His young daughter took my payment so it's a real, cool family environment. great fries too. You gotta check it out. A real blast from the past.

White Hut has a special place in my heart. Whether it's Big E time, or just some random time of year, they're always ready with their relatively cheap, well-made, down home burgers. They can be a little on the small side, but with some grilled onions, they're grease heaven (and, considering this place has the perfect feel of part greasy diner, part 1950s nostalgia, it's the perfect fit). There may be other burger joints in the world, but there's only one White Hut. And it's one glorious, greasy hamburger-filled hut at that.

For beginners, the burger had no taste and no flavor and the saute onion was equally tastless. To add insult to injury the saute onion only made the white burger bun soggy. Though the change over from the parents to the kids in ownership has produced a few changes, it's still a great place to grab a quick bite to eat CHEAP. A hot dog, order of fries, and a soda runs a little under $5. It's a barebones, pull a stool up-to the bar and watch us cook your food-type place, and the foot reflects that. Burgers, fries, hot dogs & that's it. As an added bonus: they stock Stewarts soda & put malt vinegar out for your french fries! Malt vinegar on fries on one of my favorites and most places around here only put out the standard issue ketchup.

White Hut is something of a local institution in West Side, and while I can see the cult appeal, if taken purely on the food, the Hut is rather ordinary. I can't say I'm not a fan-- I appreciate the crazy atmosphere, the honest fast-food grilling, and the fact that it's a local line joint instead of a corporate stooge haven-- and I'll happily take folks there to experience the local flavor, even though the menu isn't one I can eat off of any more. Ultimately, you can get only a handful of things, and all those are very simple in nature: hamburg, cheeseburger, hot dog, fries. Pick your option, pay, eat, get out. It's that simple. They give the option of grilled onions for your food-- and those are cool. The rest of the options seem institutional in quality, so they're not really a big deal one way or the other. Really, the appeal to the joint, I think, is the crazed nature of the place, not the chow. I recommend it-- just don't expect a gourmet burger, OK?

I'm a huge fan of crazy, packed, and hectic line-cooking joints like this one. They fall under the category of "know what you want and order it, damn-it, because there are only about 5 items on the menu and they're all good". All of the employees have a crazy organization to get everyone in and out quick style, and I love the grilled buns and caramelized onions. They're one of the local food vendors you must to leave room for if you attend the Big-E. I've only frequented them a handful of times with my main squeeze, as he's a Springfield local, and was obligated to share with me his favorite burger. I remember the first time we went I was a vegetarian and wasn't able to order anything, but after laying eyes on his juicy, delicious burger I started to gravitate toward the dark side ;)

While everyone seems to love love love this place, it's not all that wonderful. The burgers are ok, but from from frozen patties? Also the prices are horrendously high. $3.00 for a hot dog?? I'd just go down the street to costco and get a bigger, more delicious hot dog AND a soda for $1.50. Again, if you've got money to blow on subpar food, go here.

First time here, arrived late afternoon so I easily found room at the counter. A cheeseburger, fries and tea cost 6.50. As others commented, the burger is thin but fresh and tasty, the bun was nicely warned and the fries deliciously crispy. The onion rings looked fantastic, I'll have to try them next time. Fresh brewed iced tea was a pleasant surprise and I can't wait for the fresh lemonade after memorial day, almost everyone was already asking for a glass. Service was extremely friendly but remember, it was relatively quiet when I was there.

On March 3, Yahoo ran an article listing the "Best Burger" in every state. I was very surprised to see that White Hut won the title of "Best Burger in Massachusetts". I worked in West Springfield for a while, and must have driven past it a hundred times. Truth is, I never stopped here because it looked like a dump. But that was in my pre-Yelp days. One thing Yelp has done for me is to get me out of my comfort zone and venture into some places I might not have set foot in otherwise. So today, I set foot into the White Hut. It's not much to look at on the inside either - eleven counter stools and a U-shaped counter for 7 or 8 standees. I ordered a single cheeseburger with grilled onions, onion rings and a soft drink from a super sweet woman at the counter. The food ran about 8 and a half bucks. I sat at the counter and soaked in the 1950'ish atmosphere. The burger was pressed on the grill, so the roll was squished into English muffin proportions. This was hamburger simplicity and deliciousness at its pinnacle. Nice and juicy with great flavor. The grilled onions added a nice touch, as did the fresh lettuce and tomato. The rings were very good too, a generous portion of well cooked real onion rings. I take a lot of these "Best of" lists with a grain of salt. I mean seriously, in a state with over 21,000 restaurants, how can anyone possibly select the "best" hamburger. But these lists are fun to look at and argue over. Fun is also a good word to describe my first visit to the White Hut. It's a blast, a real walk into a time warp of a place. Go check it out.......

Never been to West Springfield before and don't really have any reason to return. But hot damn, those burgers were yummy! I got the fried onion while my husband skipped that topping so I saved him a couple of bites because I couldn't, in good conscience, let him leave without tasting how delicious they are. Sure, the wrapper used to pack up the burder was completely transparent with grease but: WORTH IT! The service was fast and the lady taking orders was so friendly and very nice.

i had never heard of this well loved establishment but my boyfriend brought me yesterday for lunch and I can see why there is all the hype! GREAT and simple cheeseburger with raw onions and ketchup. Absolute classic burger joint from the 1930s ... Nothing fancy at all about this place. Diner counter and a few tables. I've heard about this place from locals and finally got to try it. Milk shakes are made fresh with ice cream and at only $3.50, they are worth every penny. Burgers are not huge but everything from the lettuce to the beef tasted fresh. I didn't get the famous grilled onions but have heard they are great. Fries and onion rings perfectly done ... French froes here are a magic hangover eraser. The value is there too! Everything is only a bit more expensive than fast food. Overall, if you don't mind a bit of commotion and disorder, its a great old fashioned burger/diner joint. They also serve breakfast. Oh ... And if you've ever eaten at the legendary In N Out burger chain ... This is as close to those burgers as I've found in MA. (Minus the animal style ...) I love White Hut!!

This place is ridiculous. Ridiculously good, that is. As other posters have commented, it's best to throw caution to the wind and order a hamburger with the fried onions. I've never had food served to me just on a napkin, but it works here ... and when the food is that good, who cares whether it comes on a big fancy plate? The fries were done to perfection, and I really enjoyed the witty and friendly banter with the staff. Definitely a place to stop at when I come back through Springfield again.

Ever since I was a small(ish) child I've been a burger guy. Over the years I've tried your cheapy fast food chain burgers, your road-side shack burgers, your drive-in burgers, your sit-down restaurant burgers, your gourmet burger bar burgers, your "family-style" restaurant burgers, and your $6 "gourmet"-meets-fast-food burgers. The point is, I love burgers, and I've tried them all. And White Hut makes burgers that are some of THE BEST burgers I've eaten in my entire life! Some will poo-poo and say they can make burgers like these at home. But no, no they can't. Because if they could we'd all be eating at their house! Some may say that they're overpriced for what you get. But apparently they've never been confronted with an $11 hamburger before. Okay, the complaints have an element of truth. The ingredients are simple, with none of the frills that many diners have come to expect. And the food is slightly pricey. But the reality of the situation is that the flavor that comes off White Hut's grill can NOT be matched! Oh, you've got Kobe and Wagyu beef? Oh, you offer a thousand topping options? Oh, you've got sacks of fries fried in peanut oil and one of those cool Coke machines with all the flavors? Oh, you've got alcohol? Shakes with alcohol? Hmm, lemme think about it...Ehhh, whatever! White Hut has an old greasy grill, lunch counter service, burgers whose flavor far exceeds their size, hand cut fries, and onions fried to caramelized perfection! They also have a nice selection of flavorful sodas to boot! And the place is run like a well-oiled machine! There is no nonsense here. You're getting delicious, quality, food, backed by decades of legendary service and a sterling reputation. There is a reason White Hut is a Western Massachusetts institution. It's not hype. It's not sentimentality. It's flavor, plain and simple. It's a cheeseburger that tastes exactly like a cheeseburger is supposed to taste! It's the freakin' DEFINITION of cheeseburger! If you look up "cheeseburger" in your Websters there should be a picture of the White Hut staring back at you from the page! That's not to say other places aren't good too. Like I said, I've tried 'em all, and enjoyed most of them. But it you don't like the White Hut there's a good chance you just don't like burgers.

SOMETHING IN SPRINGFIELD MADE the list of "best 33 burgers in the country"?! this is an old school diner that's good but probably more of a locals' favorite. I wouldn't trek here just to try the burgers just sit down at the counter & order ---Cheese burger with special onions and tomato lettuce and mayo: (a popular combo of toppings according to the worker) They cut my cheeseburger in HALF but left my bf's whole because I am a girl! i guess girls are daintier when they eat? ---onion rings: I like the light breading, although they are greasy!! NOTE: They take credit card at the register on the right of the counter and cash only on the register at the left. PLUS: Breakfast is served everyday only til 1030am. You can order burgers and dogs anytime though!

Greasy heaven Crowded. A little surely (people taking your order), greasy (in a good way), dive-ish, with tons of regulars, this is the place to get a great tasting basic burger. While I'm not an onion lover, those onions in the grilled looked oddly tempting. Solid fries, but not the draw. Take a week off your life and grab a few burgers!

I was in the area paying a visit to the Basketball Hall of Fame. As usual, I used my trusty Yelp app to see if there was any interesting stops in the area. I found the White Hut and took a short ride over. I enjoyed this place. The counter girl was very friendly. I had a double cheeseburger with fried onions. The cheeseburger had two patties cooked on a grill with fried onions and white american all on a smaller toasted bun. While not the biggest or juiciest burger I've ever had, this burger had great flavor. I also tried a hot dog and fries. The hot dog was grilled and served on a toasted white bread style bun. The dog had a nice flavor to it and tasted great with some mustard and relish. My son had a vanilla shake ....very tasty!! I had a nice cup of coffee for the road....good bean here too. And was very glad I made a stop here. Great little casual spot with good food and fast friendly service.

I had read about White Hut online a couple times so made a point to stop here on a recent trip. The place really has an old-school american restaurant feel that is a rarity these days. The staff were friendly and the burger was good. I wasn't sure if they took cards when I ordered since everyone was paying with cash but they did. The onion rings were probably my favorite. If you're in the area do yourself a favor and give this place a try!

We had to stop here, since it's featured in Hamburger America. The place is a small, counter top stop. No nonsense! Ordered a cheeseburger with the grilled onion, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. They were very good. However, I'd recommend just onions and mayo. That's what I will be getting on my next trip. Also, you should order two. The breakfast sandwiches looked awesome, as well. I can see this moving to 5 stars once I achieve the above goal with the new method. Since this review wasn't particularly funny, I will end with a joke that will surely knock off your socks. I hesitate to say what I really feel about this iconic grill. I leave annoyed every time I visit. They ask me what I want before I even stop my entrance to the center of the floor to read the menu. I do want to try something different once in a while! The hamburgers are very small. I won't order them again. I ordered two hot dogs last week and waited for 10 minutes for the fries to cook...? I waited while people who came in after me got theirs, paid and left. Was it because my server was at the opposite end of the counter from the deep fryer?! She could have at least kept the dogs hot. I just don't get it. There is always a problem. Matter of fact, I'm reducing my rating to two stars just because I don't feel comfortable for giving three. Oh, two dogs, fries and a soda... almost ten dollars. Really? P.S. It smells bad out side, move the dumpster and spray the grounds with bleach and water for God's sake!!

I came here today before going to the Railroad Hobby Show down the street. I got a burger with lettuce and fries. The burger was average and so were the fries. I would not go out of my way to come here since you can get a burger at most restaurants. The way it works here is you order your food then they give it to you and then you sit or stand and eat and then you go tell the cashier what you ordered and pay before walking out the door. This is the only place I have been to that does this, if you wanted to you could lie about your order and they would probably never know if you are being honest or not.

I give it five not because it's the best burger I've ever eaten, but it's the best burger joint I've ever sat in. You won't find a menu for anything other than shakes and floats, so allow me to explain.... 2 cheese wit fried, inside = 2 cheeseburgers with fried onions for here (not to-go) wit a side = with a side order of fries The staff is awesome. Each one of them stood out to me as being friendly, helpful and happy. I almost wanna write a book about what it's like to work here. Ladies' burgers are cut in half... how nice! I never really thought about how nice that would be. The burgers are pretty tasty: the cheese is nice and melty, the bun is toasted and they are just the right size. The hot dogs are good, I don't know how you could mess up a hot dog. You can add cheese and fried onions to dogs, too. Standard condiments of ketchup, mustard, relish and raw onions are available, too. The first visit, I tried a shake. It was.... ok. Nothing special. They use soft-serve ice cream (they have chocolate and vanilla) and it tasted like they didn't add any extra chocolate to the shake. I tried a black cherry float the next time, and YUM! I would get one of those again. Prices are whatever. You pay about $1.50 for a cheese wit fried and $1.75 for a side, I think. They'll get you on the shakes and floats, for almost $4 a piece. It's worth it, in my opinion. You're paying for the speed, the freshly made piping hot food, and above all, the nostalgia. This place is great. They'll have a barstool with my name on it before I'm dead.

Been going here for years! Always know for me as the place for a quick burger or cheese dog! Parking has improved but still tight.. hate to say it but yes I am a parking offender!! When there is no parking spots.. hello Taco Bell parking lot :) Seating is also tight inside... So grab a barstool as you get in or stand. A little seating outside- a newer addition. They do have a set up at the Big E fair. But I think the West Springfield location has a more authentic feel..

Being a life long resident of Springfield I'm kind of embarrassed that I've never been here. Well today was the big day. Stopped in during lunch time. It was moderately busy, but we were able to grab two stools up front. Staff was friendly and engaging making jokes and busting stones. Place was full of locals with first names being known on both sides. We ordered a strawberry milkshake, onion rings, couple burgers, and a lemonade. Overall, everything was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. The burger wasn't anything I couldn't make at home. For the price, it didn't seem worth the value. The patty was extremely thin, but it was nice to see they used real cheese and not processed cheese. Onion rings were good, and the lemonade was freshly squeezed. It's cool that they've been around since 1939 pumping out old time shakes and burgers. It has it's place, but I prefer something more creative. I would also like to see ALL, not some employees wear food handling gloves.

Burgers, dogs, and fries. That's about all you get here. They keep it simple and have been at it for many years. People generally rave about White Hut, but to me it's just meh. I make a much better burger at home. It's an assembly line with no atmosphere, but it's cheap, and quick, and better than McDonalds.

It is all about the caramelized onions. The flat top is well conditioned from years of service so of course the burgers are good, not huge, but good. The service is fine, with counter service they have a hard time avoiding you if it isn't crowded, like when I went. The huge stack of cartelized onion they keep at the edge of the flat top could be put on shoe leather, and make it palatable. The onion rings are also high quality, the onion doesn't slide out of the breading and leave you with two things you don't want. My buddy said the fries were good, and his burger without onions was good. Overall if you are a burger fan and in the area you should give it a try, if for no other reason than to be part of such a long tradition.

My friend drove by White Hut a couple weeks ago and suggested that we give it a try out of curiosity, and we are glad we did. The West Springfield location is very unassuming from the street, and sort of looks like a diner. When you walk in, there are maybe 8 bar stool-styled seats directly in front of the tiny kitchen area. You can see everything that's going on while they're making it, and the interactions between all the workers was pretty funny (albeit somewhat inappropriate since they were working), but nevertheless gave the place a very laid-back and fun vibe. Being first-timers, we asked for a menu, to which one of the workers stated "Burgers, dogs, and fries. That's it." A place that has been around as long as White Hut apparently has with such a simple menu definitely (hopefully) meant the burgers, dogs, and fries had to be pretty good. I ended up getting a double cheeseburger with lettuce, grilled onions, ketchup, and mustard with a side of fries. They also had a pretty good selection of milkshakes, floats, and old-style soda, so I went with a root beer float. The burger patties were very thin, so I was glad I went with a double instead of a single. The burger itself wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was definitely above average. I usually judge a places like this by how good their fries are, and they were very good and crispy. My root beer float was made with soft-serve ice cream which I love compared to scoops of hard ice cream. I would definitely go there again sometime. The price was a little more than I would spend for something similar at a place like McDonald's (about $10), but the fact that you can pretty much customize your burger, and can see it being made definitely adds a little something more.

I've been going to the white hut since I was 14 years old which is just shy of 30 years. Same guy at the grill same ridiculously good hamburgers and hotdogs. You can't go to western mass and not stop at white hut or you haven't been to Western mass. I don't live in the area anymore but I specifically stated come back for their food. Family run and operated and still on the trust system... You tell them what u had to eat at the register. Old school and still killing it the way a great place should.

I found this place about 8 years ago when there was saw dust or peanut shells on the floor and no menu. In their 3rd generation of family ownership there is no finer old school hamburger being served. Personally a "cheese burg fried" which is a cheeseburger with White Hut's signature fried onions, just plain is out of this world. Real short order cooks, nothing is written down as you hear 7 cheese burgs, 3 fried, 4 plain shouted out from the often standing crowd behind a completely filled old style lunch counter. In business at this location since 1939, something about that, the owners and the team is very unusual in this cookie cutter world.

I love this place. I don't know why the food is so delicious, it's really just simple burgers, dogs, and fries. The kitchen/standing area is maybe garage-sized with stool seating at the counter and standing tables in the back. You walk in, shout your order, are served in maybe 5-7 minutes, and then afterwards you pay by honor-system at the cashier. It's important to get fried onions on your cheeseburgers. This place seems expensive but I can't tell if their prices are high or if I just always end up eating too much when I go. Definitely worth driving out of the way for. For the best experience, go around noon when the place is packed and everybody is shouting.

We came here expecting to get some sort of breakfast sandwich, but they stop serving breakfast at 10:30. Bummer. Instead we had some burgers that were just about the perfect hangover cure! Perfectly cooked, the onions are wonderful and we could sit at the counter. Onion rings are just eh. You can skip them. But eat the burgers! Even if you think you don't need to...you really need two.

I love White Hut. I love it all. I love sitting at the counter and watching the well oiled machine do what it does best. I love the way they mark the burgers when they're ordered, I love the press of the people all around, I love the hustle and bustle of the place and I love the food. I usually get a burger and fries and sometimes an extra burger or dog. As a friend of mine said, they go down easy. They are not sliders in the sense that they're little tiny burgers but you'll surprised after eating one that you want another and can probably easily put it away. I'm not a big fan of the grilled onions but some swear by them. This place is the epitome of old school, local, fast food at its finest. It gets crowded so be patient and you'll be helped with some great servers that know what they're doing.

If you are timid or nervous in boisterous places think twice before you go here. That being said this is so straight forward the place becomes a sh#$ show. Basically you walk in and there is a small counter of a dozen stool and a small line of cooks and equiptment behind it. There were two ladies shouting at the crowd who needs to order. People raised their hands, stepped forward and spouted out their orders. There is no menu posted anywhere or anything like that, but here are your choices: 1) Hot dog 2) hamburger 3) cheese burger 4) cheese burger with cooked onions 5) french fries Yes the menu is that simple, and that is the only reason this place could function the way it does. After you order just pay attention because whoever you ordered from will shout "who got ........." once you respond they want to know what you want on your food (ketchup, mustard, relish, and raw onions). They slap it together, hand it to you, and then you drift away into a blissful inner fat kid moment. There was no room at the stools so we crowded around a small stainless steel prep table in the middle of the dining room and stuffed our faces. Some of us went up for seconds, and those that did not were in a trance-like state mumbling about how great the experience was. After we ate we meandered over to the register, and recalled what we had inhaled, and payed the guy at the register. The price was awesome. for 4 people we devoured 8 cheese burgers, 6 hot dogs, 4 beverages, and 2 sides of fries for $40!!! Now the food: the fries were crispy golden brown and delicious, the burgers were 2 oz handfuls of heaven, and I am pretty sure the hot dogs had crack in them they were so dam good. And the hot dog buns were traditional Newe England style: to split buns toasted after a little butter was brushed on either side.....perfect I will be back in force in a few months (1.5 hr drive from Boston)

WOW! The VERY BEST Hot Dog I think I can ever remember having! If not the best, it was definitely top 3! We weren't even planning on going here, but on a Sat afternoon, on our way to somehwere else, I said, Oooh, let's see if White Hut is open! IT WAS! Yaaaaay! It is just as described, you walk in, there are appx 12 counter stools and the aluminum stand table in the back. The employees were cool and very nice. We took our seat on the stools and ordered up our first items (we took the lead from another yelper, who said they ordered things one at a time, which was perfect, that way, the items are fresh and hot, plus you wait less than a minute or two for your next items! I started with a Hot Dog and he started with a Cheeseburger, and we split one order of fries. We helped ourselves to the cooler in back, where he selected a Black Cherry Stewarts Soda, and I had a Grape. We each got their scrumptious grilled onions on our items. The buns are buttered and grilled and as I sit here recalling the taste, my mouth is watering! The fries were FANTASTIC, twice fried, so their were super crisp (yet tender inside), and stayed hot for a long time! After we each finished, we ordered the opposite (he a hot dog w/ mustard and relish, me a Cheeseburger with raw onions, lettuce, mayo, ketchup and mustard). Again, a hit for each of us! The prices were fantastic as well, we ended up with 2 orders of fries, a total of 3 hot dogs, and 2 cheeseburgers, and 2 sodas......grand total.....$14. (and change)! I couldn't believe it, you couldn't get out of McDonald's with that much food, for that little amount of money! Overall, the Hot dogs were my fave, altho the burgers were yummy too. They are very thin, I think a double cheeseburger would be pretty yumbly!....Next time I would do the very same thing, in the same order. It was super satisfying, and we both kept saying, "WOW, this is so damn tasty"! The hot dogs (i tried not to notice this) are fried first, and then done up on the grill. They had a lovely snap to them and the meat was all beef and was mild and flavorful. Not salty tasting, not overly spiced like a Nathans dog. Also, the service was fast and friendly....the yelper who said you could easily spend less than 20 minutes getting off the highway, eating, and getting back to your trip was totally right on the mark! This place opens every day at 6:30 am, and serves BREAKFAST! I will update if i ever get up there to try it! Its all egg based (no pancakes or French toast), but you can have eggs any way, and egg sandwiches, plus they have bacon and sausages....and you can have burgers also that early, altho the guy was telling me the burgers take a little longer because they have the grill set to a lower temp for the eggs. OK, so now you know all about White Hut! Run out NOW AND GO THERE! (especially you, my Hot Dog Loving friends...Matt, Mich, and others!) LOL............ There is a reason this place has been going strong since 1939! This year is their 70th year! It's AWESOME! Can ya tell I really (REALLY) enjoyed it? :oP

I must have passed this place a dozen times in my life before I finally stopped. I'm kicking myself every since for that small bit moronic inebtitude but alas, I finally stopped. I now have contracted H.A.S. (Hamburger addictive syndrome) because of this place. The doctor said I'mm allowed to go back once in awhile to feed the ever growing hunger for a hard iron grilled burger with grilled onions on a browned bun, with cheese if I must. When I took my first bite, the clouds were puffier, the sky bluer, and the traffic, not so bad. Do you live close? Get there for lunch. It will make your day much better!

When I first saw these baby burgers, I'm was reminded of that ad, 'Where's the beef?" I would rather drive a little further to Local Burger. The burger is too thin. Way to thin. I want to taste beef, not onions. Wendy's has better Cheeseburgers. Usually I go for this type of roadside food, I think it really fails to live up to the hype. Ironically I dislike all beef dogs, which this place seems to serve. I want pork and beef with a skin that snaps. Maybe if I grew up with this place the nostalgic memories would make it a 3 star place?

The cheeseburgers (annoyingly called cheeseburgs here) are very thin but tasty. The fried onions on my "burg" was a nice touch. Grade: B- The hot dogs were below average. Nothing special about them at all. No taste. Grade: D. The operation of the restaurant was chaotic at best. Things weren't crazy because the place was packed but because the workers were disorganized and did not work together. They spent more time bumping into each other than anything else. Our waitress incorrectly repeated my order back to me three times and was shocked when I asked for such exotic things as pickles and bacon, which they do not have. Grade: D-

The place is small, the place is old, the place is crowded, when you leave the place you will smell like onions and be splattered with grease for hours afterwards........but the food is SO DAMN GOOD!!! Whip out the cash and have them serve up seconds...or thirds!

This place reminds me of White Castle with its caramelized onions. If you don't plan on getting any toppings, at least put a little salt or pepper on your plate. The hot dogs look very good.

The White Hut is a tiny little hometown burger joint that hasn't changed much over the years. Whenever I bring people home to Western Mass, it's mandatory that I take them to experience the mega-greasy gloriousness that is White Hut. The burgers are tiny and good luck finding a place to sit, but that's what I love about the place. It's so loud in there so you have to pretty much yell your order to the cook and they add it to the 5-10 orders they're working on at the time. No matter how busy it is, I'm always in and out in under 10 minutes. The menu is tiny as they only offer burgers, hot dogs and fries so there's little room to screw up an order. When the Big E comes around, you can always grab White Hut there as well, and it's just as good.

This place is a legend, and for good reason. They don't do a lot, but they do it very, very well. The burgers and hot dogs are all good, the fried onions are a must on these and are very flavorful. Simple, delicious comfort food. A great place for lunch on a Sunday afternoon.

A local cult favorite... Small menu consisting of burgers, dogs, and fries but they do it right. Next time you're in the area looking for something fast skip out on the chains and give "The Hut" a whirl... You won't be disappointed!

If you grew up in the greater Springfield area, and/or went to the Big E at least once in your life, you've probably experienced (or at least heard of, you poor sod) the White Hut. This is what people call a Springfield institution. The burgers are small, greasy, and delicious; perfect comfort food. The service is quick, and the place gets crowded in a hurry on a weekday afternoon. But with good reason. If you want your food quick and cheap, yet damn tasty, you can't go wrong. Unless you're a vegetarian, in which case, you will never know what wonders you are missing.

The White Hut ceased being merely a burger joint eons ago and has without a doubt been elevated the status of Institution! It's imprint on the Western Mass landscape has become indelible. The "cheeseburg fried" (cheeseburger with fried onions) is absolute perfection and the hot dogs (recommended well done w/ mustard & relish) are too delicious. Add in bangin' breakfast sandwiches, amazing fresh-squeezed OJ and ice cold Stewie's and it simply doesn't get any better. So leave the 'tude at the door and enjoy!

There arnt many places like this around anymore. you walk up to the bar in this tiny shack of a restaurant and yell out an order. the only choices are hot dogs, burgers, and fries. They hand you your food about 2 min later fresh off the grill. basic toppings like lettuce tomato and fried onions compliment the burgers perfectly. they are nice and small so you can get seconds. I usually have 2 burgers and a hot dog. the feel inside is that this place hasn't changed since it opened in 1939.

Love the burgers, beautifully simple, but so delicious! Cheeseburger with fried onions, they are a little small, so get two or three. Go at off-peak hours to avoid the crowds.

Love this greasy burger joint. it's been around forever and is just the cure for a Sunday hangover. The fried onions make the burgers. It's nice that they have fries now(and they are good fries) but the grub is good without them. The dogs are excellent too, deep fried before getting thrown on the grill to keep warm, with the nice toasty hot dog buns that are the topper. You can get whatever toppings you want, or none at all. It's a once in a while heart-stopper joint that you've got to make a point to stop into every few months.

I get back to Springfield every couple of years and the White Hut always is my first stop (the Student Prince being the other). Ate there last Tuesday (first time since July 2005) and it was as awesome as always. Fed family of five for $27.50, everyone left happy and full!
